Brief: To produce a design for a non-fiction book about typography using supplied copy; the cover to have a typographical focus. The book – From the book to the streets: large type in public spaces – is a journal of writings about the history of large wooden and stencil type. I designed both the inside and outside (41 pages and the cover). This involved extensive consideration of format, layout, and typography in order to allow readers to read most comfortably and with ease.
To create the cover, I selected some intriguing, large wooden type from the university department collection, relevant to the period discussed in the book, and printed it on a proofing press. Digital scans of the results were then arranged to form the design.

The front cover. The letter ‘F’ is debossed to mimic the effect of real letterpress.

The spine in the context of a bookshelf.

The orange endpapers, selected to work together with the cover, and in consideration with the content and topic of the texts.

A text spread demonstrating the styling of main text, pull quotes, captions, figure numbers and footnotes.
